News from the Nest: BHS October 13

    Message from the Principal

I hope that everyone enjoyed the three-day weekend. Last Thursday BES students and staff had to come over to the high school. Afterwards we received this message from BES Principal Lori Krueger:

On behalf of everyone from BES we would like to thank the BHS staff for all their support and help today as we arrived at your school.  The Kindergarten teachers shared that as they walked up to the main entrance of the school, high school students were playing rock, paper, scissors through the window of the second floor hallway with the kids… I know there were many more acts of kindness and support that were experienced by BES!

This week we have several events taking place including performances from our music ensembles, a visit from the National Guard and Civil Support Team, and a school meeting on Wednesday. Please reach out with any questions and have a great week.

FundraiserThe Class of 2028 is kicking off its fundraising with the Bow Falcons apparel sale.  The last day to order is 10/28/24 at 10AM. Please follow the link below to order:

    BEA Blood Drive

Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood. It is essential for surgeries, cancer treatment, chronic illnesses, and traumatic injuries. Whether a patient receives whole blood, red cells, platelets or plasma, this lifesaving care starts with one person making a generous donation. On Friday the BEA is hosting a Blood Drive at Bow High School from 11:00 to 4:00. Please consider donating if you can.

    Fall Concert

Our music ensembles will be performing this Thursday at 7:00 in the Auditorium. Please come hear our talented student-musicians.

    School Meeting on Wednesday

On Wednesday we will have our second School Meeting of the year. There will be announcements from each of the classes, a short video, and a competition between the BHS Granite State Challenge Team and Staff. These meetings are an opportunity to build school spirit and connections.

    NH National Guard School Visit

The New Hampshire Army National Guard will be present at Bow High on October 16th accompanied by their Civil Support Team (CST) and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) team. The primary mission of these teams is to support civil authorities by identifying chemical agents and substances, assessing potential consequences, advising on appropriate response measures, and assisting with requests for additional state and federal military resources. This event is open to all students who are considering a career in STEM fields or have an interest in working with the New Hampshire National Guard. Teachers  are encouraged to bring their classes to visit the teams stationed in front of the school.

The teams will be showcasing their unit’s transportation assets, which include a command vehicle, an operations trailer, a communications vehicle known as the Unified Command Suite (offering a wide range of secure communications capabilities), and an analytical laboratory system vehicle (equipped with comprehensive analysis tools for characterizing unknown hazards). Additionally, there will be several general-purpose vehicles and a remote-controlled robot designed to detect airborne chemicals. For a brief overview of the Army National Guard Civil Support Team, please refer to the following video: Army National Guard Civil Support Team 60 Second.

    In the Classroom

Students in Mrs. Dow’s LINKS classes and Mrs. Chaffee’s AP Statistics classes worked together this week to complete an investigation called “Candy Grab”. LINKS students, over a couple of different trials, attempted to see how much candy they could pick up at one time. The AP Statistics students used that data to do statistical analysis and make predictions. It was really fun watching these groups of students working together to have fun and to learn.

    Message from the Principal

Greetings from Bow High School. This week, on October 9th, we will have our first Flex Day of the year. Flex Days are utilized for a number of reasons. These days allow us to conduct standardized testing without impacting classes, provide opportunities for field trips, allow for enrichment activities, and provide time for students to work on projects and activities. Examples of things that students may choose to do include gaining career hours, completing community service hours, working on the college process, or getting ahead on school work.

These days also allow us the opportunity to schedule students time to meet with their teachers if they are in need of additional support or to make-up assessments. Students for whom this applies will receive an email from the school. Please reach out to me with any questions.

PSAT (10/9/24): Message from Kate Kulacz

Reminder for the upcoming mandatory PSAT testing for all juniors on Wednesday, October 9th from 7:45am to 11am. The test administration will begin promptly at 8am and late students will not be admitted due to Collegeboard digital testing protocols. Please take note of the following details: Students need to report to their assigned classroom no later than 7:45am.

    • There will be signs and staff in the main lobby to help direct students to their assigned classroom.
    • The official test is a total of 2 hours and 14 minutes and consists of 2 sections:
      • Math and Reading/Writing Section
    • All testing will take place in the 2200 wing.
    • Every student must bring their school issued Chromebook for the test. The device needs to have a full charge, and be able to maintain that charge for a minimum of 3 hours in order to complete the test.
      • Please note if you have any issues with your Chromebook put in a help ticket immediately so IT can make sure your Chromebook is working for the day of the exam.
    • We recommend students bring a water bottle and small snack for the 10 minute break time.

    ****College Board Resources PSAT/NMSQT

Students can prepare for their assessment by downloading and taking a full-length adaptive practice test in Bluebook (bluebook.app.collegeboard.org), reviewing their results on My Practice (mypractice.collegeboard.org) by signing in with the same credentials provided by their school, and using Official Digital SAT Prep on Khan Academy® (https://www.khanacademy.org/digital-sat).

    Auditions for the Fall Play

Auditions for the fall play will take place on Monday and Wednesday of this week in the Music Wing of the school. Productions at Bow High School are always of the highest quality and I urge anyone who might be interested to sign-up for an audition time. Please sign up for an audition by using this link: BHS Theater

    ********October 11th and October 14th.

October 11th is an Early Release Day. The schedule for the day can be found here: Early Release Schedule. There will be no school on October 14th due to the Indigenous Peoples / Columbus Day Holiday.

    Student IDs

All student IDs have been distributed. Students need to show their IDs to access open campus. Please let me or Mrs. Barth know if you have any questions.

    In the Classroom

This week students in BEST classes began their time on the Ropes Course outside. The Ropes course is a unique opportunity for students to safely push beyond their comfort zone while building trust and camaraderie with one another. Utilizing a Ropes Course is something that many different organizations take advantage of so our students are fortunate to have this opportunity as part of their classes. Thank you to the BEST teachers for the additional time and work they put into offering this experience to our students*.*

News from the Nest: BHS September 29, 2024

    Message from the Principal

Greetings from Bow High School. We had a very busy week last week with games, rehearsals, and events designed to help students think about their post-high school plans. A gigantic thank you goes out to Kate Kulacz and the School Counseling Department for organizing a College Fair as well as a Senior Night for parents. Having been through the college process with one son, and going through it again with another, I know there is a lot of information to process. I encourage students to make appointments with their counselors if they have questions or need assistance in planning for the future.

    Interact Club Movie Night

The BHS Interact Club is hosting a movie night (watching “Rio”) on Friday, October 4th at 6:30pm on the lawn by the 1300 wing.  There will be popcorn and water sold, but admission is free and open to anyone in the community!

    Drivers Education

Getting a driver’s license is a really big deal for many high school students. We understand how important Drivers Education is and the challenge of finding hours to drive with an instructor. However, drive times should never be scheduled during class time as these absences will be considered unexcused. Thank you for supporting the importance of being in class.

    Washington DC Trip

Bow High School is participating in a dynamic, hands-on, civic education program for juniors and seniors in Washington, DC this spring. As educators, we are always looking for new and interesting ways to provide extra challenges and opportunities to enhance the students’ educational experience. We strongly believe that Close Up does just that and will provide a learning experience of a lifetime!

With over 50 years of experience, Close Up is the nation’s largest non-profit and non-partisan citizenship education organization; and they are driven by a mission to help students become more effective and informed citizens. While in Washington, DC, on Close Up, your student will have the opportunity to live and learn with peers from around the country while engaging in seminars with policymakers and explorations of historical sites and government offices.

    This 6-day program prepares young citizens to meet the challenges of governing themselves and their nation through discussions of key domestic and international issues with members of Congress and their staff, Washington insiders, and other leading policy experts;

    • Comprehensive study visits to the significant historical sites and cultural neighborhoods of our nation’s capital;
    • Daily small-group workshops that encourage students to connect what they see in DC with what they are learning in the classroom back home; and
    • Self-directed time with their teachers to explore the nation’s capital!**Applications are due no later than 3:00 p.m. on Friday October 4th, 2024. Please email jarmstrong@bownet.org for more information. You may also visit www.CloseUp.org to learn more about the Close Up Program.

    **Message Regarding Open Gym

Hi all, my name is Bryana Szepan, and I am a senior on the BHS girls' basketball team. I am contacting you about our open gyms, which run every Sunday morning from 10 to 11:15 a.m. If anyone is interested, you are welcome to participate. This is an excellent opportunity to get a basketball in your hands and meet other players before the start of the season. We hope to see you at our next open gym!

    In the Classroom

This past week, in his filmmaking class, Sam Dixon and his class explored the use of montages in film. Students looked at how montages are used to allow a filmmaker to show the audience the passage of time in a condensed manner. One of the scenes that Mr. Dixon used to illustrate this point was the training montage from “Rocky IV”. In filmmaking students study different film techniques and then apply them to their own works. I am looking forward to seeing what the students in the class create***.***

    Message from the Principal

Greetings from Bow High School. Thank you to our students and families for coming out to the various Homecoming events we had this past week. A huge thank you goes out to Peer Outreach and their advisor Tabitha Pauley for all the work they did to plan and put on the events. We had a record number of students attend the bonfire, pep rally, and Homecoming Dance. Kudos to the many staff who chaperoned these events which made holding them possible.

I would also like to thank our students who continue to lead through their actions. Thank you for your spirit and the many acts of kindness, both seen and unseen, that take place each day. Have a great week.

    College and Career Planning

This week we have three events designed to help students think about, and begin planning for, life after high school. On Wednesday, from 11:00 to 1:00, BHS will host a College Fair in our gymnasium. Currently there are 67 colleges and universities who are planning on attending. Wednesday evening the School Counseling Department will host a College and Career Information Night. Check out the brochure here: Senior Night Brochure**. **

On Thursday, Maureen Ariel is bringing a group of students to the NH Construction Career Day in New Boston. Thank you to the School Counseling Department and Ms. Ariel for providing these opportunities.

    Picture Retakes

Picture retakes will be Thursday, September 26th. We ask that students getting their pictures redone, or taken for the first time, come by before lunch.

    Sibling Pictures for the Yearbook

Sibling pics (seniors and their siblings that attend BHS) on 9/23 and 9/27 during Flex.

    Friday Night Lights

Friday the 27th will be our traditional Friday Night Lights Game for the Boys Varsity Football Team. The game gets underway at 7:00. We hope many of our students and community members will be able to attend.

    Congratulations

Congratulations to Senior Adam Folsom who was identified as a Commended Student as part of the National Merit Scholarship Program. ****Also, congratulations to Junior Dominic Catalfimo who was selected for NH's first ever Modern Band All State on drums. He will be attending the October NHMEA Music Conference in Nashua with the other students selected on 10/16.

    In the Classroom

This week in Sarah Bragg’s Drawing and Painting class students worked on expanded view illustrations. They began their projects by taking photographs from around the school. Next, students enlarged the photograph and used that as the basis for their illustrations. It was neat to see the new and different perspectives items and locations took on as students worked on their drawings. Some of the things that were created were expanded views of a chess board, a basketball, a railing in the school, and vitamin water bottles. I invite students and families to check out the student artwork on display throughout the school whenever you are walking the halls.

    In the Classroom

On Friday, in Ms. Pauley and Ms. O’Brienhalla’s American Dream class, students engaged in several activities to learn about academic integrity and plagiarism. The American Dream teachers utilized a number of different mediums to ask students to consider what is a copy and what is original. One activity they did was to compare Queen’s “Under Pressure” to Vanilla Ice’s “Ice, Ice Baby” and discuss if both are original works or if one was a copy. This lesson had students thinking independently about originality and plagiarism; an especially important topic in the age of Artificial Intelligence. It was a fun, creative, and valuable learning experience for students.

    First Day at BHS

    Message from the Principal

On behalf of the entire staff I would like to thank our students for an awesome first day. Thank you especially to the Senior class for your leadership.

This morning we gathered as a school in the auditorium to begin the year. I shared my hopes for the year that we will embrace challenges while remembering that the simple act of saying hello can have a powerful effect on others. Students had an opportunity to visit each of their classes, eat lunch, and participate in activities outside. One of the activities we participated in was forming “BHS” as a whole school community and then each class created the numbers of their graduating year. Here are some drone pictures of those activities:  BHS First Day Pictures

This afternoon during lunch I happened to see something that I wanted to share because I believe it highlights the type of students we have at BHS. Mike Laughlin, our Head Custodian, was outside when he came across some trash on the ground. As he was about to pick it up a student cut in front of him and said “I got this, don’t worry about it” and threw it away. This was a small act that was done for no other reason than to be kind.

I have a couple of brief items to share with everyone:

    **

    Thursday, August 29th

Tomorrow is an “Odd” Day (Periods 1, 3, 5, 7). Tomorrow is also the first day for CRTC.

    **

    Open House

The BHS Open House for Families begins tomorrow at 5:30 in the auditorium. Please have logged into Alma to see your student’s schedule so you can visit each of their classes. We will be following an 8 period day for the Open House. If someone needs a printed copy of the schedule we can print it out but we are hoping to utilize Alma for student schedules.

There will be several clubs and community organizations at our Open House. This is to encourage a strong school-community connection and to help foster positive relationships. Please make sure to check out the groups that will be participating.

    **

    Transportation

Here is the link to bus routes: BHS Bus Routes 24-25

    **

    Senior Breakfast

The Senior Breakfast will be Friday (7:30 - 8:15). We hope to see all of the Seniors there.

    **

    Parking and Driving

As Mrs. Barth shared with students today, our expectation is that students will park in their assigned parking spot or the lot that is open to everyone. If there are any questions students can come to the Main Office so we can help.

Today's dismissal was fast because of the end of the day activities. I anticipate that tomorrow may be slower. I will be out directing traffic to help ease congestion but anticipate a little longer time exiting Falcon Way.

    **

    Thank you!

Thank you again to students and families for a great first day.
