News from the Nest: BHS November 03

    Message from the Principal

I’d like to say congratulations and thank you to the student organizations who helped put on Trunk or Treat last Saturday, Peer Outreach and Tabitha Pauley for the Halloween fun, our athletic teams for their successful seasons (some still ongoing), Jill Armstrong and Student Senate for organizing the Mock Election, and The Taters for their hilarious improv show on Friday. I feel very lucky to be surrounded by such talented, fun, and caring students.

This Friday we will have our monthly school meeting. To accommodate our guest speaker, Maj. Gen. David J. Mikolaities, we will have a different schedule than previous meeting days. The schedule for the day can be found here: November 08, 2024

Part of our recognition of Veterans Day will include raising the POW / MIA flag. This flag was established by Congress and stated that it would be the symbol of our nation’s concern and commitment to resolving as fully as possible the fates of Americans still prisoner, missing and unaccounted for. According to the US Department of Defense, more than 80,000 American service personnel are missing from previous conflicts and 38,000 are estimated to be recoverable. Our hope in raising this flag is to bring education and awareness of the sacrifices service members and their families have made over the history of the United States.

This week will also include an Early Release Day on Monday (schedule here: November 04, 2024) and no school on November 05 (make sure to vote!). Have a good week.

    Winter Sports Sign-up

Sign-ups for winter sports are now taking place. Please visit our website to register via Final Forms.

    Open Gym for Girls Basketball

    The girls basketball team will be hosting open gyms on the following days:11/10 - 10:00-11:30 am, 11/12 -  3:00-4:30 pm, 11/19 -  3:00-4:30 pm, 11/21 -  3:00-4:30 pm, 11/26 -  3:00-4:30 pm.

Open gyms are a great way to meet fellow Falcon girls' basketball players and get practice in before tryouts start on 12/2. We hope to see you there!

    Senior Project

As part of his Senior Project, Ethan Anderson is raising money for the Class Gift by selling Bow, NH merchandise. Here is the link to be able to order: shirtmasters.printavo.com/merch/townofbow

    In the Classroom

This week, Mallory Niemaszyk’s Civics class had the opportunity to work with graphic novel author Marek Bennett (author of The Civil War Diary of Freeman Colby). Mr. Bennett showed the students the process he goes through when researching a topic and how he uses primary sources to create his novels. Students are taking the lessons that they learned from Marek Bennett and are applying them to works they create based on the amendments of the US Constitution.

Students began a recent class by going over a recent quiz where they were tasked with identifying different types of metals and tools that were used in the course. From there students worked on a variety of individual tasks ranging from finding images online to use as the basis for a design, to drawing their own design, to using metal to create their own, individualized pieces. It was a lot of fun watching the creative process play out in class.

    Message from the Principal

I hope that everyone enjoyed the three-day weekend. Last Thursday BES students and staff had to come over to the high school. Afterwards we received this message from BES Principal Lori Krueger:

On behalf of everyone from BES we would like to thank the BHS staff for all their support and help today as we arrived at your school.  The Kindergarten teachers shared that as they walked up to the main entrance of the school, high school students were playing rock, paper, scissors through the window of the second floor hallway with the kids… I know there were many more acts of kindness and support that were experienced by BES!

This week we have several events taking place including performances from our music ensembles, a visit from the National Guard and Civil Support Team, and a school meeting on Wednesday. Please reach out with any questions and have a great week.

    BEA Blood Drive

Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood. It is essential for surgeries, cancer treatment, chronic illnesses, and traumatic injuries. Whether a patient receives whole blood, red cells, platelets or plasma, this lifesaving care starts with one person making a generous donation. On Friday the BEA is hosting a Blood Drive at Bow High School from 11:00 to 4:00. Please consider donating if you can.

    Fall Concert

Our music ensembles will be performing this Thursday at 7:00 in the Auditorium. Please come hear our talented student-musicians.

    School Meeting on Wednesday

    NH National Guard School Visit

The New Hampshire Army National Guard will be present at Bow High on October 16th accompanied by their Civil Support Team (CST) and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) team. The primary mission of these teams is to support civil authorities by identifying chemical agents and substances, assessing potential consequences, advising on appropriate response measures, and assisting with requests for additional state and federal military resources. This event is open to all students who are considering a career in STEM fields or have an interest in working with the New Hampshire National Guard. Teachers  are encouraged to bring their classes to visit the teams stationed in front of the school.

The teams will be showcasing their unit’s transportation assets, which include a command vehicle, an operations trailer, a communications vehicle known as the Unified Command Suite (offering a wide range of secure communications capabilities), and an analytical laboratory system vehicle (equipped with comprehensive analysis tools for characterizing unknown hazards). Additionally, there will be several general-purpose vehicles and a remote-controlled robot designed to detect airborne chemicals. For a brief overview of the Army National Guard Civil Support Team, please refer to the following video: Army National Guard Civil Support Team 60 Second.

    In the Classroom

Students in Mrs. Dow’s LINKS classes and Mrs. Chaffee’s AP Statistics classes worked together this week to complete an investigation called “Candy Grab”. LINKS students, over a couple of different trials, attempted to see how much candy they could pick up at one time. The AP Statistics students used that data to do statistical analysis and make predictions. It was really fun watching these groups of students working together to have fun and to learn.

    Message from the Principal

Greetings from Bow High School. This week, on October 9th, we will have our first Flex Day of the year. Flex Days are utilized for a number of reasons. These days allow us to conduct standardized testing without impacting classes, provide opportunities for field trips, allow for enrichment activities, and provide time for students to work on projects and activities. Examples of things that students may choose to do include gaining career hours, completing community service hours, working on the college process, or getting ahead on school work.

These days also allow us the opportunity to schedule students time to meet with their teachers if they are in need of additional support or to make-up assessments. Students for whom this applies will receive an email from the school. Please reach out to me with any questions.

PSAT (10/9/24): Message from Kate Kulacz

Reminder for the upcoming mandatory PSAT testing for all juniors on Wednesday, October 9th from 7:45am to 11am. The test administration will begin promptly at 8am and late students will not be admitted due to Collegeboard digital testing protocols. Please take note of the following details: Students need to report to their assigned classroom no later than 7:45am.

    • There will be signs and staff in the main lobby to help direct students to their assigned classroom.
    • The official test is a total of 2 hours and 14 minutes and consists of 2 sections:
      • Math and Reading/Writing Section
    • All testing will take place in the 2200 wing.
    • Every student must bring their school issued Chromebook for the test. The device needs to have a full charge, and be able to maintain that charge for a minimum of 3 hours in order to complete the test.
      • Please note if you have any issues with your Chromebook put in a help ticket immediately so IT can make sure your Chromebook is working for the day of the exam.
    • We recommend students bring a water bottle and small snack for the 10 minute break time.

    ****College Board Resources PSAT/NMSQT

Students can prepare for their assessment by downloading and taking a full-length adaptive practice test in Bluebook (bluebook.app.collegeboard.org), reviewing their results on My Practice (mypractice.collegeboard.org) by signing in with the same credentials provided by their school, and using Official Digital SAT Prep on Khan Academy® (https://www.khanacademy.org/digital-sat).

    Auditions for the Fall Play

Auditions for the fall play will take place on Monday and Wednesday of this week in the Music Wing of the school. Message from the Principal

Greetings from Bow High School. We had a very busy week last week with games, rehearsals, and events designed to help students think about their post-high school plans. A gigantic thank you goes out to Kate Kulacz and the School Counseling Department for organizing a College Fair as well as a Senior Night for parents. Having been through the college process with one son, and going through it again with another, I know there is a lot of information to process. I encourage students to make appointments with their counselors if they have questions or need assistance in planning for the future.

    Interact Club Movie Night

The BHS Interact Club is hosting a movie night (watching “Rio”) on Friday, October 4th at 6:30pm on the lawn by the 1300 wing.  There will be popcorn and water sold, but admission is free and open to anyone in the community!

    Drivers Education

Getting a driver’s license is a really big deal for many high school students. We understand how important Drivers Education is and the challenge of finding hours to drive with an instructor. However, drive times should never be scheduled during class time as these absences will be considered unexcused. Thank you for supporting the importance of being in class.

    Washington DC Trip

Bow High School is participating in a dynamic, hands-on, civic education program for juniors and seniors in Washington, DC this spring. As educators, we are always looking for new and interesting ways to provide extra challenges and opportunities to enhance the students’ educational experience. We strongly believe that Close Up does just that and will provide a learning experience of a lifetime!

With over 50 years of experience, Close Up is the nation’s largest non-profit and non-partisan citizenship education organization; and they are driven by a mission to help students become more effective and informed citizens. While in Washington, DC, on Close Up, your student will have the opportunity to live and learn with peers from around the country while engaging in seminars with policymakers and explorations of historical sites and government offices.

    This 6-day program prepares young citizens to meet the challenges of governing themselves and their nation through discussions of key domestic and international issues with members of Congress and their staff, Washington insiders, and other leading policy experts;

    • Comprehensive study visits to the significant historical sites and cultural neighborhoods of our nation’s capital;
    • Daily small-group workshops that encourage students to connect what they see in DC with what they are learning in the classroom back home; and
    • Self-directed time with their teachers to explore the nation’s capital!**Applications are due no later than 3:00 p.m. on Friday October 4th, 2024. Please email jarmstrong@bownet.org for more information. You may also visit www.CloseUp.org to learn more about the Close Up Program.

I am contacting you about our open gyms, which run every Sunday morning from 10 to 11:15 a.m. If anyone is interested, you are welcome to participate. This is an excellent opportunity to get a basketball in your hands and meet other players before the start of the season. We hope to see you at our next open gym!

    In the Classroom

This past week, in his filmmaking class, Sam Dixon and his class explored the use of montages in film. Students looked at how montages are used to allow a filmmaker to show the audience the passage of time in a condensed manner. One of the scenes that Mr. Dixon used to illustrate this point was the training montage from “Rocky IV”. In filmmaking students study different film techniques and then apply them to their own works. I am looking forward to seeing what the students in the class create***.***

He will be attending the October NHMEA Music Conference in Nashua with the other students selected on 10/16.

    In the Classroom

This week in Sarah Bragg’s Drawing and Painting class students worked on expanded view illustrations. They began their projects by taking photographs from around the school. Next, students enlarged the photograph and used that as the basis for their illustrations. It was neat to see the new and different perspectives items and locations took on as students worked on their drawings. Some of the things that were created were expanded views of a chess board, a basketball, a railing in the school, and vitamin water bottles. I invite students and families to check out the student artwork on display throughout the school whenever you are walking the halls.

There are a lot of events scheduled and we hope to see everyone participate by cheering on their classmates and taking part in the dress themes each day. Here are the theme days for Homecoming 2024

    • Monday: Monochromatic
    • Tuesday: Country vs Country Club

    • Thursday: Adam Sandler
    • Friday: Bow Falcons!

    Homecoming Dance

The Homecoming Dance will be Saturday from 7:00 - 10:00 in the BHS gym. Students will need their ID, which they can pick up starting next week, for entry. Tickets will cost $10 and will be on sale during lunch. To bring a guest students will need to get the form from the Main Office and return it at the same time they purchase their tickets. Tickets will not be sold at the door and there is no re-entry once a student departs the dance. Thank you.

    NHS Induction and Homecoming Bonfire

On Thursday the National Honor Society will host their induction ceremony for new members. Immediately following, there will be a bonfire up in the dirt lot. The bonfire will end by 8:30. Students attending the bonfire should plan to be in courts or the dirt lot and not in any other area on campus.

    Schedule for Sept 17

On Tuesday we will have a modified schedule for the club fair: Sept 17 Schedule. Students will go to the auditorium first to allow advisors a chance to get their table ready. Check out our club webpage to get a sense of all the offerings BHS has for students: Club Webpage

    In the Classroom

Students in Amanda Guilbert’s, Lucy Koup’s, and Dave Niemyszk’s Integrated Life Science classes began their termite lab this week. Students used the scientific method and put their observation skills into practice by investigating how termites react to a figure eight symbol drawn on a piece of paper inside of a petri dish. Students, working together, asked questions and tested theories while engaging in the work of a scientist.
